BIO:Dr. Crystal Gaddy entered the field of occupational therapy, receiving her Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from East Carolina University in 2003. She has practiced occupational therapy for 21 years in various settings, including acute care, inpatient, behavioral and mental health, skilled nursing, outpatient adult and pediatrics, and school systems. More than half of those years were dedicated to working with pediatric students, 3 to 21 years of age, addressing developmental growth throughout that lifespan. In 2019, she received her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy and certificate in Healthcare Ethics from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. This presentation will address the ethical issue of moral distress among related service providers in the K-12 educational setting. The focus will be to educate school-based practitioners on the importance of understanding moral distress as a factor in burnout within the workplace and equip practitioners with resources to better assess and address moral distress from an interdisciplinary approach. Presentation will include Google slides, case studies, and group interactions for collaboration.
Objectives include:
Identify those ethical and professional situations leading to moral distress for related service providers.
Identify strategies and effective problem-solving skills from an interdisciplinary approach that explore prevention and intervention strategies addressing moral distress.
Apply evidence based knowledge toward developing support systems among school-based practitioners and the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
